Department Summary
The Division of Student Life supports the University's academic mission through comprehensive programs and services that promote and advance student learning and success, while fostering an inclusive and vibrant campus community. Student Life includes four departments, the University Career Center, Office of the Dean of Students, Erb Memorial Union, and Physical Education & Recreation, and a number of key programs including the Holden Center for Leadership and Community Engagement, Parent and Family Programs, Major Student Events (Commencement, Homecoming, University Day), Student Government Engagement & Success, Student Conduct and Community Standards, and Support for Students in Crisis and Students of Concern.
The Erb Memorial Union (EMU) is a department of the Division of Student Life. The EMU is a multifaceted auxiliary service that employs over 90 professional staff and 400 student staff, and serves over 15 thousand daily users during the academic year. The EMU welcomes students, faculty, staff, the community and visitors to campus, and its mission is to provide learning experiences and opportunities for personal growth in an open, inclusive, and resource-rich community where students and staff collaborate to inspire and sustain extraordinary programs and services that promote diversity and social interaction. The EMU is student-centered and is operated in collaboration with a student Board, who is actively involved in determining the character and scope of the department and approve the budget recommendations of all EMU services and programs.
The EMU Craft Center supplements the out-of-classroom experience by providing students educational, cultural, leadership, social and recreational activities.
Position Summary
This position supports the Craft Center educational program through the delivery, coordination, promotion, and on-going evaluation of the Ceramics studio workshops and participant open studio hours. This support position is also responsible for the day to day management of the Ceramics studio operations. The individual in this role provides daily formal and informal instruction to University students and community members, and assists in developing program offerings.
In addition, this position will:
• Prepare and assemble materials and supplies for classes, including purchase of supplies.
• Set up studio and materials for other ceramic instructors.
• Arrange daily schedule of studio use and perform clean up procedures.
• Oversee, schedule, and assign work to Ceramic Studio Assistant student employees.
• Organize and set up clay kits, outreach events and promotional materials for students on campus, recruit participants for program, collect student data to track participants.
The individual in this position will also routinely:
• Assess the needs of participants, communicate policies and procedures to a diverse group of people, and resolve minor conflicts.
• Provide ideas for new program opportunities to Craft Center management team.
• Organize, manage and execute daily operations of the ceramic studio. This includes firing electric and gas kilns, mixing glazes, maintaining equipment, cleaning the facility, ordering supplies.
• Be responsible for all safety precautions inherent in maintaining a public ceramics studio.
• Work collaboratively with Craft Center professional staff and student employees, as well as EMU staff and students.
• Assist in promotion of the Craft Center and serve as a campus resource to University community and Craft Center participants.
This position will often need to run errands to procure supplies using the department van. Therefore a valid driver's license is required.
Minimum Requirements
• High School Diploma or equivalent and at least two years of relevant experience (paid or volunteer), supporting community programs that serve children, youth, or adults OR
• Associate Degree and one year of work experience (paid or volunteer) which must be working in youth development programs, adult education, teaching, program delivery or related functions.
AND
• Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated skill to work with diverse audiences.
• Demonstrated skill to use computers for word processing, data management, and communications.

• Commitment to anti-racism and ability to contribute positively to a diverse, inclusive environment.
Preferred Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in ceramics, fine arts, or equivalent.
• Ceramics experience to include a comprehensive knowledge of clays, glaze formulation, gas and electric kiln firing and equipment maintenance.
• Awareness of and ability to be responsible for all safety precautions inherent in maintaining a safe public ceramics studio.
• Supervisory and prior teaching experience.
